Below is a list of essential oils that are currently being widely used or researched. Most of these oils are quite strong in nature and can cause side effects if they are not taken in an appropriate manner and dose. Furthermore, their individual benefits are variable, so you should consult a medical practitioner before using these oils, either internally or topically. The benefits of herb are also provided in greater detail on a separate page, so feel free to click on any of those essential oils to know the full extent of its health benefits.

Health benefits: It has been traditionally used to uplift mood and fight depression, and also as a way to enhance libido, protect wounds against infections, kill bacteria, and provide relief from gas. Furthermore, neroli essential oil speeds up the fading of scars and after marks, promotes cell growth, fights infection, reduces spasms, eliminates body odor, improves digestion, takes care of skin, while soothing anxiety and inflammation.
Some essential massage oils may make their way into the placenta, an organ in your uterus that grows along with your baby and helps to nourish it. It’s not clear if this causes any problems, unless you take toxic amounts, but to be safe, it’s best to avoid certain oils if you’re pregnant. Those include wormwood, rue, oak moss, Lavandula stoechas, camphor, parsley seed, sage, and hyssop. Ask your doctor if you’re unsure.
For respiratory support. Frankincense is a powerful health support for respiratory problems such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pneumonia, and bronchitis. It even helps when suffering from laryngitis. Diffuse it into the room where you intend to spend some time. For best results, use an ultrasonic cool mist diffuser. Never heat essential oils, because heating them diminishes their therapeutic effects.
As a driving aid. Taking a long driving trip? Be sure to pack the peppermint essential oil. Its ability to wake up the nervous system and keep your brain alert is unmatched. It’s better than coffee and no caffeine jitters! Peppermint oil is also good for kids with ADHD. Add several drops of peppermint oil to a spray bottle containing distilled water, shake it, and spray it lightly on their clothes before studying to help increase concentration and clarity of thought.
How do I go about getting the free book on Essential Oils by Ty Bollinger? Within the past year, I have been reading more and more about essential oils and their amazing benefits. The problem is knowing what brands to purchase that are not toxic even from health food / vitamin stores. I live in Toronto ON Canada so its difficult to get it shipped from the USA.

First, thank you so much for posting these blends! I am so eager to try them. May I ask though – how does the size of your diffuser (and it’s water capacity) matter to the oil amounts in each ‘recipe’? For instance, my daughter has a smaller diffuser than me. Her’s holds a total of 120 ml. Mine on the other hand holds up to 300 ml. I almost never fill it to capacity with water, but it did start me wondering what water amount these blends were based upon.

Do not take any oils internally and do not apply undiluted essential oils, absolutes, CO2s or other concentrated essences onto the skin without advanced essential oil knowledge or consultation from a qualified aromatherapy practitioner. If you are pregnant, epileptic, have liver damage, have cancer, or have any other medical problem, use oils only under the proper guidance of a qualified aromatherapy practitioner. Use extreme caution when using oils with children. It is safest to consult a qualified aromatherapy practitioner before using oils with children. For in-depth information on oil safety issues, read Essential Oil Safety by Robert Tisserand and Rodney Young.

Essential oils may help to reduce toxicity by promoting the detoxification of your home and body. These days, we are all inhaling and ingesting a number of chemicals and environmental toxins that can be dangerous for our health. Some work as mild diuretics, thereby increasing urine production and improving detoxification. And some oils aid digestion and promote the detoxification of toxins that buildup in the body. (18)
With neuroprotective effects and cognitive performance boosting abilities, essential oil benefits have helped many people who are suffering from neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia. In a scientific review published in Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience, researchers found that because essential oils possess powerful antioxidants that work to inhibit free radical scavenging, they help to naturally improve brain function and reduce inflammation.
When you were Epigenetics Labs we could purchase all 12 essential oils for $177 – the 15 ml size. Please tell we still can – at least for a reasonable amount. Your combinations are not so different from DoTerra. I left Doterra and started ordering from you because you had more pure, organic oil at a reasonable price. I prefer to do my own mixing, thank you.
Please reply to Ashley or find someone who knows the answer. Thank you very much for helping us study the uses of Essential Oils – I for one hate Doctors with a vengeance… I now have permanent kidney disease from a careless doctor who ‘thought’ he knew what he was doing and he accidentally/essentially overdosed me – “I was on life supports (thanks to his medical knowledge and the drug pusher he was) for 7 days!” I’d be dead if my brother hadn’t found me on the floor. My Dr. now says he was getting kickbacks from the Food and Drug Admin. So don’t trust the system or the drugs anymore.

It is considered the most versatile and useful oil and a must for every oil diffuser! Simply add just a few drops to your oil diffuser to fill with room with the natural aroma of lavender. Many essential oils are steam distilled, which involves simmering the plant material to produce steam, which travels through a tube, which is then run through cold water. The liquid that forms from condensation will be in two parts, a water compound, and an oil compound. The water compound is where floral waters, such as lavender and rose water, come from. The oils that rise to the top are DIY essential oils.
There are three methods to get essential oils. These are extraction, distillation, and expression. The distillation process is the most complicated. It requires specialized equipment and careful monitoring. As for the expression method, the product is not usually classified as an essential oil. This leaves us with the extraction method. In this tutorial, we will try rose essential oil-making, so let’s get started!

The essential oils are the aromatic, natural chemical compounds extracted from various parts of a plant: leaves, flowers, stems, roots, bark, etc. They are in such a potent form that a single drop of essential oil can equal multiple teaspoons of the dried herb (for instance, 1 drop of peppermint oil equals more than 25 cups of peppermint tea and oils can be up to 70x more potent than their dried herbal form). This means less is more.

Hi Katie and Joan. I get my essential oils from a lot of different places. I honestly can’t see spending the extra money that Young Living and Do Terra charges for most of my DIY projects. The oils that I get from Mountain Rose Herbs, Aura Cacia and even Essential Depot are just as strong, have been through the same testing for active constituents and are much cheaper. My soap and other body care products turn out fine and are effective. You need to make your own choice based on what you are doing and want to achieve.

Diffuse lemon for health. Diffuse lemon oil (see #2 above) to help kill airborne bacteria. Research carried out by Dr. Jean Valnet (co-author of the book The Practice of Aromatherapy: A Classic Compendium of Plant Medicines and Their Healing Properties) shows that diffused lemon oil can rapidly kill off the bacteria that causes meningococcal infections, typhoid fever, staph infections, pneumonia, diphtheria, and tuberculosis.
Essential oils are highly concentrated oils extracted from aromatic plants such as lavender and rosemary. About 700 different types of plants contain useful essential oils, and there are several methods used to extract them — the most common of which is distillation. While essential oils can be very expensive to buy, they are relatively cheap to distill at home.
Skin complaints. Whether your skin is dry and mature or oily and blotched with blemishes, frankincense oil has wonderful balancing qualities. It helps to reduce lines and wrinkles by tightening and toning skin, accelerates the healing of blemishes, skin ulcers and wounds, and stimulates cell regeneration. For anti-aging benefits, put several drops into your favorite night time moisturizer. For acne and blemishes, apply it neat directly on the problem area, unless you have very sensitive skin, then dilute as described below.
After asking the patients to record their headache severity and associated symptoms every 30 minutes for a total of 2 hours, researchers found that the difference between the controls and treated patients was statistically significant. From 129 headache attacks in the treatment group, 92 responded entirely or partially to lavender. In the control group, 32 out of 68 headache attacks responded to the placebo. (19)
Essential oils are highly concentrated oils that have a strong aroma. Sometimes they are called volatile aromatic oils because of their high concentration of the aromatic compounds. For example, the oil of “absolutes” is obtained from delicate flowers by either enfleurage or solvent extraction. Absolute oils often mimic the natural aroma of the plant and are also more colored and viscous than essential oils. (1)

Health benefits: This useful oil inhibits bacterial, microbial, viral & fungal infections while also killing insects, protecting wounds from becoming septic, relaxing spasms, soothing inflammations, eliminating body odor, stimulating perspiration, increasing urination and the removal of toxins from the body, reducing fever, and repelling insects. Finally, it is beneficial for stomach health and digestion.
I would start with about 5 drops of oil for your diffuser (for most) depending on room size and the strength of the oil… then can add more. 10 drops for a large room. So for a recipe with 3 different oils, I usually start with 1-2 drops of each and see how that goes. I can always turn it off and add more if I feel it can be stronger, and I’ll usually end up a little stronger in our main living space for example. In my room, I get away with closer to one drop of each oil since it’s a smaller room. Again you can always add more, but start small. 🙂

I bought this to use and help organize my essential oil collection. I was even able to prop the bigger bottles at an angle on the bottom row. I love it! It was easy to assemble. At first I was confused by the “frosted” white sides. So I emailed Big Hala and they were so helpful and explained that it’s just a protective film to prevent scratches. So I looked at it closer and removed the film and it’s clear acrylic! I docked a star because each acrylic row seem to have a little “extra scratchy” piece in the middle, probably from production. But overall it’s great and the measurements were exact.

Oxyful Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier Aroma Essential Oil Diffuser is perfect for small to medium sized rooms like the bedroom, dining, bathroom or lounge room, especially if they are air-conditioned or in winter when the air is dry. Keeping your living space humid and preventing colds, flu and congestion. It can also prevent dry and cracked skin.
Harvest your plants correctly. Just as you need to research when to harvest plants for best essential oil production, you need to research how to harvest them. Careless handling, harvesting the wrong parts, even harvesting at the wrong time of day can reduce the quantity and quality of the essential oils. For example, you only want to use the flowering tops of the rosemary plant when making rosemary essential oil. Discard or use the rest of the plant some other way.
Dry the plant material. Drying reduces the amount of oil in each plant, but can greatly increase how much essential oil you make per batch. This is because you’ll be able to fit more material into each batch. Drying should be done slowly and away from direct sunlight.[5] Commercially grown plants such as lavender and peppermint may be allowed to dry in the field after cutting for a day or so.
