Young children and the elderly may be more sensitive to essential oils. So you may need to dilute them more. And you should totally avoid some oils, like birch and wintergreen. In even small amounts, those may cause serious problems in kids 6 or younger because they contain a chemical called methyl salicylate. Don’t use essential oils on a baby unless your pediatrician says it’s OK.
For respiratory support. Frankincense is a powerful health support for respiratory problems such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pneumonia, and bronchitis. It even helps when suffering from laryngitis. Diffuse it into the room where you intend to spend some time. For best results, use an ultrasonic cool mist diffuser. Never heat essential oils, because heating them diminishes their therapeutic effects.
Add tropical atmosphere to your home with this Real Bamboo Essential Oil Diffuser that uses ultrasonic technology. Harmless pulsating ultra-high frequency sound waves create friction in the water molecules causing the water to evaporate into a cool steam. This nebulizing process eliminates the need for heat and breaks up the water and any added essential oils. A cool mist of delicious micro-particles is released into the air whilst increasing humidity levels for an ambiance of well-being.
According to a review published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, “at least 90 essential oils can be identified as being recommended for dermatological use, with at least 1,500 combinations.” What gives these oils their skin benefits is their ability to fight against pathogens that are responsible for dermatological infections. Oils can also help to improve inflammatory skin conditions, like dermatitis, eczema and lupus, improve the general appearance of your skin and even aid wound healing. (16)

Many essential oils are steam distilled, which involves simmering the plant material to produce steam, which travels through a tube, which is then run through cold water. The liquid that forms from condensation will be in two parts, a water compound, and an oil compound. The water compound is where floral waters, such as lavender and rose water, come from. The oils that rise to the top are DIY essential oils.

Calming, stress relieving, sleep promoter. Feeling stressed out or having a night of insomnia? Dilute as described below, and rub lavender oil along the sides of the neck and/or breathe it in deeply. You can also place a drop or two into a warm bath before you relax into it. Lavender has wonderful calming and soothing effects, and promotes deeper sleep.

Health benefits: It is great for uplifting moods and fighting depression, and it has also been popularized for eliminating gas build-up, warming the respiratory system, reducing body odor, curing infections, relaxation, promoting urination, and the subsequent removal of body toxins. This useful essential oil also strengthens gums and stops hemorrhaging, cures inflammation, improves circulation, and can help cure arthritis, while calming anxiety and relieving tension.
Hi Phyllis, thank you for your interest in our Organixx Essential Oils. Currently, we do not carry Ginger Essential Oil as a single oil, but it is a key ingredient in three of our Essential Oil Blends (Digest blend, Shield blend, and Relief blend). If we have plans to do so in the future, it will be announced and added to our website. I’ve long been a candle addict. There’s nothing like lit candles, good music and the ambiance it creates for a relaxing evening at home. And while I haven’t completely kicked the candle habit to the curb, I’m being wiser about my choices for the more occasional lighting of only soy or beeswax while avoiding the paraffin (toxin releasing) candles.  But an even better option, which I pretty much use all day long while at home are our essential oil diffusers. Definitely a new kind of addiction. Another plus? It’s elicited more, “Wow, it smells great in here,” comments from guests than my mix of candles ever did!

The Essential Oils Directory lists over 130 oil profiles for essential oils, absolutes and CO2 extracts. Each detailed profile includes the uses, benefits, properties, botanical name, common method of extraction, oil color, oil consistency, perfumery note, strength of the initial aroma, aromatic description, constituents, and safety information. References are provided.

A few tips: When you're looking at the many uses of essential oils I would encourage you to look for the body systems you're wishing to nurture or support, and the oils that work with that system. When it comes to particular emotions, you can also get hints from the oil itself as to the impact it has on our mind and emotions. For instance, tree oils can help us feel more grounded with their earthier aromas. Start small, seek guidance, support, and scientific resources, and feel empowered to learn as you go.

Keep an eye on the still. After a while, the distillate should begin to come through your condenser and into your separator. The process should be fairly hands-off, but you want to make sure you don’t run out of water in your still. Depending on the length of the distillation process, you may also need to change the water in the cold-water tub. If the hot pipe warms the water up, replace it with fresh cold water or ice so that the cooling process continues to work.
I’m sorry I didn’t answer them sooner, Carol. I work full time and part time, so I usually only have time for this on the weekends. For the citrus, you use the peels. Try to get as much of the pith off as you can. The water will soak into it making the oil extraction harder to do. The left over water can be used like a hydrosol, just be sure to use it in a few days, or you can use it in place of the water when making soap. You could also use it to water plants. I use mine in the garden or compost it a lot.
Health benefits: This essential oil protects wounds against becoming septic, relaxes spasms, increases blood & lymph circulation, promotes growth & regeneration of cells, purifies blood, facilitates digestion, and is good for liver. Furthermore, it soothes inflammation and nervous afflictions, while being good for stomach and generally toning up the body.
Never apply a pure essential oil directly to your skin. Essential oils are extremely potent in their undiluted form and need to be added to carrier oil, such as almond, apricot kernel or olive oil. Do not ingest essential oils 12. If you suffer from a pre-existing medical condition, check with your doctor before using essential oils, as some can interact with medications 2. Pregnant women and young children should not use essential oils unless under the guidance of a medical professional 2.
Essential oils are found in various plant parts. The oils of peppermint, patchouli, basil, and geranium come from the leaves and stems, clove oil comes from flower buds, and oils of jasmine, rose, and tuberose come from the open flowers. Oils are produced from the whole dried and crushed fruit of anise and coriander, the peels of citrus fruits, the seeds of cardamom, the wood of cedar, the bark of the cinnamon tree, the roots of vetiver grass, the needles of fir trees, the twigs of cypress trees, and the exuded resin of myrrh—in short, just about every anatomical structure. Some plants produce more than one type of oil. The flowers of bitter orange (Citrus aurantium) yield neroli oil; its leaves, petitgrain oil; and the fruit peel, orange oil. Cinnamon is just as versatile, supplying different oils from its leaf, bark, and root.

After years of carrying around this unasked question, I discovered that the term “essential oil” was coined by the sixteenth-century alchemist Paracelsus because, in his mind, these substances contained the quintessence of plants. Centuries earlier, Greek philosophers had proposed that matter appears in four forms (air, earth, fire, and water), and Aristotle had proposed a fifth form—in Latin, the quinta essentia—which would represent the essence of things. To Paracelsus, the oils represented the most concentrated form of the individual characteristics of the plant—its essence. Today, I often get a blank stare when I tell people that I breed essential oil plants. However, like most people, I love to talk about my intense interests, and given time, comfortable surroundings, maybe a cup of tea, and a willing ear, I’m likely to launch into a discussion of one of my favorite subjects—essential oils.

Some essential oils have sedative properties, which can be helpful for people who are having trouble falling asleep or sleeping through the night. Lavender oil, in particular, is known to be an effective sleep aid because of its ability to leave you feeling relaxed and calm. Some other oils that can be used to promote restful sleep include Roman chamomile, ylang ylang, bergamot and vetiver.

Certain essential oils have also been used by midwives to help reduce fear and anxiety during childbirth. A 2007 study in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine suggests that women who used aromatherapy during labor reported less pain overall and were able to use fewer pain medications. (2b) In fact, a 2016 study published in Pain Research and Treatment showed that “aromatherapy can successfully treat pain when combined with conventional treatments.” (3)

There are also quite a few studies that have found essential oils to be helpful for hair growth. One such study, conducted in 2015, evaluated the efficacy of rosemary oil on patients with androgenetic alopecia, or male or female pattern baldness. Patients were randomly assigned to rosemary oil or minoxidil (a medication commonly used for hair loss) for a six-month treatment period. Researchers found that both groups experienced a significant increase in hair count at the six-month endpoint. They also indicated that scalp itching was more frequent in the minoxidil group. (17)
