Hi Katie and Joan. I get my essential oils from a lot of different places. I honestly can’t see spending the extra money that Young Living and Do Terra charges for most of my DIY projects. The oils that I get from Mountain Rose Herbs, Aura Cacia and even Essential Depot are just as strong, have been through the same testing for active constituents and are much cheaper. My soap and other body care products turn out fine and are effective. You need to make your own choice based on what you are doing and want to achieve.
There are two types of chamomile oil, Roman and German. Esoteric Oils explains that while both oils have calming properties, Roman chamomile is better at treating mental irritation, impatience and PMS while German chamomile is more effective in the treatment of irritated skin 3. Both types promote overall digestive health and may help calm an upset stomach.
Another researched essential oils benefit is their role in aiding and improving digestion. Some oils help to relieve upset stomach, indigestion, diarrhea, stomach spasms and even conditions of the gastrointestinal system, such as IBS. Oils can also aid your digestion by helping to stimulate digestive enzymes that make it easier to break down and absorb the nutrients, fats and protein that you need.
Citrus Essential Oils are often thought of for their light, summery aromas, but I love using citrus oils all year round. My use of the citrus oils increases during the colder months as I find them energizing and help to uplift the spirits. They are the perfect complement to blends that fight off the winter blues, "cabin fever" and depression. Read about the aromatic properties of each of the citrus essential oils.

I’ve long been a candle addict. There’s nothing like lit candles, good music and the ambiance it creates for a relaxing evening at home. And while I haven’t completely kicked the candle habit to the curb, I’m being wiser about my choices for the more occasional lighting of only soy or beeswax while avoiding the paraffin (toxin releasing) candles. But an even better option, which I pretty much use all day long while at home are our essential oil diffusers. Definitely a new kind of addiction. Another plus? It’s elicited more, “Wow, it smells great in here,” comments from guests than my mix of candles ever did!

You either have to have access to chemical lab equipment (eg. a separating funnel or more distillation equipment) or you need to carefully separate the oil and water by hand. You can try using a turkey baster (not very precise) to suck off the water or try to wick off the water with cotton or paper towels, but, either way, you are very likely to lose some of the oils. Try checking out eBay for less expensive essenciers.
There are three methods to get essential oils. These are extraction, distillation, and expression. The distillation process is the most complicated. It requires specialized equipment and careful monitoring. As for the expression method, the product is not usually classified as an essential oil. This leaves us with the extraction method. In this tutorial, we will try rose essential oil-making, so let’s get started!

A pilot study published in Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice found that the use of aromatherapy as a complementary therapy helped to reduce anxiety and depression scales in postpartum women. Women between zero and 18 months postpartum were divided into either a treatment group that inhaled a blend of rose and lavender oils or a control group that didn’t receive any type of aromatherapy. After four weeks, the women using aromatherapy had significant improvements in anxiety and depression symptoms compared to those in the control group. (12)
